ΠΑΠΑΓΑΛΟΣ Derbyan (Psittacula derbiana)
The Derbyan Parakeet (Psittacula derbiana) is a medium to large parakeet belonging to the genus Psittacula of the Psittacidae family. It is mainly found in the mountain forests of Tibet, China, and northeastern India, but is also kept as a pet in many other parts of the world. It is about 45–50 cm long, including its tail, and each wing has a wingspan of about 18 to 20 cm. It is herbivorous and feeds on fruits, vegetables, seeds, berries, and nectar, while in captivity it may also consume pellets and small amounts of supplemental protein sources. Oils, chocolate, alcohol, salt, and highly processed foods should be avoided. Derbyan parrots are popular in aviculture due to their calm nature and high intelligence. They have a remarkable ability to mimic human speech; first listening to their surroundings and then copying the sounds, with some individuals learning over 150 words or even short phrases. When raised by hand, they become particularly calm, sociable, and receptive to learning. ...More
